Setting up your custom camera functions so you are always ready
If you are fortunate enough to find your digital camera has custom function settings, how do you set them up?
I posted recently about easy camera settings to keep in mind so your camera is ready when a picture presents itself. So if you don't have custom functions (Kodak brownies definitely don't have them), then you can use your mind to store the settings.
I use a Canon 6D mark2 which has two custom function settings. Actually, make that 3 because the M-mode remembers it's own settings. With three slots, what are the three most used situations you find yourself in?
Here are my three starting points that can get a shot in a pinch. And it is quick to adjust for specific scenarios from there.
- Outdoors in open shade. 1/125th, f11, ISO 400, sunny white balance. In bright sun I bump the shutter speed to a 500th.
- Indoors. 1/60th, f2, ISO 400, tungsten white balance (you could use f2.8 and ISO 800 instead)
- Flash. shutter at sync speed - 1/180th, f8, ISO 400, flash white balance
If you have other needs, you can tailor your functions for those. Here are some examples:
- Sports in full sun. 1/250th, f8, ISO 400, sunny white balance
- Modern portrait in full sun. 1/1000th, f2.8, ISO 100
- Early morning landscapes. 1/60th, f11, ISO 200
- Film scanning on a light box. 1/30th, f5.6, ISO 800
I'd really like to know how you set your own custom functions - let me know what they are in the comments below!
